The Dordogne Valley is home to an enchanting variety of picturesque villages which have kept their authentic French countryside charm. No wonder that it was here that the association “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) was created at the initiative of the then major of Collonges-la-Rouge (in 1981).

Three of those Most Beautiful Villages of France can be found at the heart of the Dordogne Valley, near Rocamadour and Padirac.

Although its name might suggest otherwise, the Dordogne Valley traverses three departments: Corrèze, Lot and Dordogne, thus linking the three French regions of Limousin, Midi-Pyrenees and the Aquitaine.

The pretty department of Lot in the Midi-Pyrenees boasts three of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France”: Autoire, Carennac and Loubressac.

These charming villages border the north of the “Causse de Gramat” near the regional nature park of the Causses du Quercy, the famous Gouffre de Padirac and less than 30 minutes from Rocamadour.

An extraordinary heritage

The organisation Le Pays d'Art et d'Histoire Vallée de la Dordogne and the Dordogne Valley tourist office offer guided visits to help tourists discover, better understand and above all enjoy this fantastic area with its rich history, unspoiled nature and architectural treasures.

Enchanting village walks

The best way to explore these authentic “Most Beautiful Village of France” is on foot. The GR hiking route passes through Autoire, Loubressac and Carennac, but all three villages are also a starting point for interesting walking trails, giving you the opportunity to get to know the valley’s impressive heritage, and offering some breath taking views along the way.
