  • La Vierge Noir, Rocamadour

Ramblers and other walking enthusiasts can explore the legendary paths in the Dordogne Valley. The beautiful “GR” (Grand Randonnée) walking trails and the St. James Way converge towards Rocamadour.

The pilgrimage route of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle

Being part of the Way of Saint James,  the basilica and crypt of Saint-Amadour feature on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and can be admired once the 216 marches of the “escalier des pèlerins” (pilgrim’s stairs) have been climbed. But the jewel of the sanctuary is kept in the Chapel of Miracles, one of eight chapels built against the rocks. It is the Black Madonna, which has been worshipped here for over a thousand years.

Ramblers have a choice of 3 different variants of the Way of St. James to roam the Dordogne Valley: The Via Averna which begins at Clermont Ferrand and leads through many of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France", the Rocamadour road in the Limousin and Haut Quercy, and finally the equally famous  Le Puy Route (the old Via Podensis) which passes through Figeac and Rocamadour before reaching Cahors.

A special place for hikers

When you walk these marked hiking trails you will be able to admire stunning views, beautiful nature and very well preserved architectural heritage. Depending on your itinerary and the paths taken, you will discover castles such as Castelnau-Bretenoux, some of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, like Autoire, Loubressac, Carennac, Turenne and Collonges-la-Rouge, the limestone landscape of the causse or the green plains along the Dordogne river.

Whether you’re going hiking or undertake a pilgrimage to Rocamadour along the Way of Saint James, on your own or with family or friends, accommodation can be easily found in the many “gîtes d'étape” along the GR long distance walking trails in the Dordogne Valley.
