Description
Jean Baptiste Brunot was born on March 2, 1859, into a family of small-scale farming landowners in the village of Laval. He married Marie Gratadour in Ambrugeat on November 23, 1882.
Along with Jacques Chêze, also from Laval, and Léonard Gratadour from Ambrugeat, they were among the pioneers of the wine trade, having
been introduced to the wine business by Gaye-Bordas himself. His clientele was very widespread: the North, the Ardennes, Normandy,
parts of Belgium and Paris, the Sarthe region, and even Switzerland.
He purchased the Notre Dame de Mazerat estate in Saint-Émilion, which became Château l’Hermitage de Mazerat.
He had one of the region’s first “wine merchants’ houses” built in Laval; it was completed in 1889.
