Description

Sergeac is situated in the Périgord Noir on the banks of the Vézère, bordered by high cliffs at the foot of which numerous prehistoric sites have been discovered. Pass the monumental cross at the crossroads, which is in a medieval style not very common in the Périgord, and you can see the imposing structure of the church built towards the end of the 11th century on Roman ruins. The village is also home to the authentic site of Castel Merle, which has 10 remarkable rock shelters, occupied by Neanderthal man 85,000 years ago and then by Cro-Magnon man 35,000 years ago. It is one of the highest concentrations of archaeological sites in Europe, showing an exceptional continuity of human occupation.
