The name of this itinerary refers of course to this magnificent bird which populates our ponds, although it is not much appreciated by the owners of these bodies of water in view of the quantity of fish that it consumes. If the plateau of Millevaches is often identified as the water tower of France because of the numerous rivers which take their sources there, it is also rich of a multitude of ponds. All of them are artificial and were created by man who most often dammed up a stream at the end of a wetland.
