The ruins of the Château de la Roche-Haute in Gimel les Cascades bear witness to the commune's feudal past. Inhabited in the Middle Ages by the lord of Gimel, the castle was partly destroyed after military defeats. This castle was not the only one in Gimel in the Middle Ages, as there was also a counterpart: the castle of Roche-Basse. The village was once divided into two villages, with two castles and two churches. This division into two may explain the village's name, ?dzumel? meaning ?twin? in Occitan. The ruins of the Château de la Roche-Hausse have been ceded to the commune and restored to make them more accessible to visitors.
